Milton Keynes - a UK data center hub with history

Published on 3rd February 2012 by Ambrose McNevin

At least for this week the London satellite town of Milton Keynes has become a data center hot spot. Nuco, which trades as Host-IT is - as the name suggests - a UK hosting provider which says it landed on a find in Milton Keynes in the form of an ex bank data center with a 1.5MW power supply. It signed the freehold nine days ago. It had been looking for a site in the area for some time - it already operates one in nearby Bletchley - near but far enough away to offer safe DR, says Nuco MD Andy Bishop. He hopes to have the site open for business in Q4 this year.
Meanwhile a firm which owns or owned many of London's theatres and which builds luxury resorts has also announced its move into the data center space at a site currently called Maxwell House. A quick history lesson- Robert Maxwell was a newspaper baron who owned Mirror Group Newspapers in the UK. He was also a  crook who stole hundreds of millions of pounds from the company's pension fund. In 1991 he disembarked from his yacht while it was at sea off the coast of Tenerife and drowned.
The initial £35m development is being undertaken by PMB Holdings and demolition of the site begins next week. The plan is to have a former worker from the Mirror Group start the job-doubtless with a smile on his face.
