Norwegian real estate company Entra is working with HP to develop what it says will be one of the world’s most environmentally friendly data centers, in Norway.

The 30,000sq  m facility will have an energy input of more than 60Mw, will use free air cooling and will reuse 50% of the energy produced to heat nearby buildings.

Entra Property CEO Kyrre Olaf Johansen said the data center, in Akershus Country, will be used for data processing and storage for  the public and private sectors.

He said these sectors are increasingly looking for data center operations within Norway to cope with growing amounts of data.

“Many large Norwegian companies consider it important that the proximity of the data center is very important,” Entra said.

“The government has pointed to the need for coordination, consolidation and joint data center solutions in Norway. Such consolidation could mean billions in savings for the state and other public sectors.”

The Greenfield Data Center’s green focus will also help to bring down costs for the operations of servers, space requirements and energy consumption,  Johansen said.

The data center will be built out in a phased fashion, with the first of four blocks covering 8,000 sq ft expected to be complete in 2014.
